ABOUT THE UNION: The Laborers' International Union, also known as just the Laborers' Union, is a labor union primarily representing dock workers—often referred to as longshoremen—and warehouse workers on the East Coast. The warehouse division includes numerous composite local offices with members in warehouse, production, food processing, mining, health care, retail and many more industries. Our union halls are home to 80,000 members in over 50 local unions in East Brickton, New York City, Boston. An additional 10,000 members belong to the autonomous LIU Canada.
The purpose of the union is to unify all workers and protect the interests of its members, establishing a strong footing at the negotiation table when bargaining for better wages, consistent work hours, a safer work environment, social regulations, etcetara.
LIU: It was founded based on the goal to fraternize all port workers in the Port of East Brickton regardless of racial background, religious beliefs, or any other secondary composition—given the high levels of diversity and considerably polarized nature of its founding era.
