“It’s stupid, you know, ‘You shouldn’t snitch.’ If you know something -- families are hurting -- and if you know something that can help these families, I think you should come forward," Rhonda McDowell said.
As gang activity increased in the neighborhood in the 21st century, Military Road became the center of one of East Brickton's most violent blocks. The 19800 block of Military Road had the most shootings of any block in East Brickton between June 2022 and June 2025. Many of these shootings during those times, and city police report that violence at the complex has steadily declined since. The violence mainly stems from gang rivalries between the Bloods and Crips in the area, who both control territory near the block.
Richway/KeepShooting: Modern Day
The KeepShooting gang also known as Richway are an active street gang of strictly ''Everybody Killer'' teenagers located on the Lower Westside of East Brickton. They originated around Military Road and Broadway Avenue, just three blocks away from the famous Broadway Homes. The KeepShooting gang began in East Brickton, where members worked to gain control of the East Brickton Department of Youth Services' juvenile detention facilities, authorities said. KeepShooting members have engaged in robberies and various other acts of Assault to protect their territory, assert their identity, and further their illegal activities, including threatening intimidating and assaulting the citizens who live in the Neighborhood and who have tried to prevent the members from selling drugs in the area. For example, the KeepShooting gang in East Brickton invested money made illegally to create videos that were posted on social media sites and used to recruit new members, build the Richway brand and raise the group’s intimidation factor. Gang members are also increasingly moving to messaging platforms, such as Snapchat, Instagram and FaceTime, to communicate with each other. These apps provide instantaneous communication similar to Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging, while providing more anonymity, according to the NGIC report. Friendship appears to be the primary motivation among students who have been involved in gangs in this area, according to the 2023 AYS. Approximate 24.2 percent of 8th graders involved in gangs said friendship was the primary reason for joining. Among 10th and 12th graders, making money was the top priority. The overarching motivation for KeepShooting was to intimidate both potential rivals and law-abiding citizens. The gang bragged that they owned the streets and demonstrated the ability to assault or steal from whomever they found. According to the government's investigations, Damien''Dami'' Ortiz was the leader of the gang set operating on base. Ortiz was later shot to death in Linden, while other servicemen faced sentences ranging from 2 to 12 years. Some of the charges against the servicemen were: Kingston, discharging a firearm within city limits and witness tampering.

As evening neared, Godfrey announced over Twitter that he was on Comstock Avenue, looking for Richway members, at 7:30 p.m., Jamel ''Jbeezy'' and Marquel ''MKay'' Kasaab walked up to Godfrey pointing a firearm at his cranium and was forced to walk all the way to Kasaab's house. Members of the KeepShooting street gang then beat and killed Isaish Godfrey in the apartment complex called Genesee Homes, East Brickton. Prosecutors accused Marquel Kasaab and Jamel Kingston of being the first one to start attacking Godfrey in a twenty-minute beating that he had to endure over a feud that happened on social media, disrepecting deceased members of Richway. Godfrey was then shot over twenty times by a Ruger SR9 and dumped into the ocean in the DownTown area if East Brickton where his body decomposed for months. In the immediate aftermath, JBeezy tweeted, “BYEE BYEE LMAOO” the Internet shorthand for Laughing My Ass Off. Nobody in cyberspace had seemed much bothered that Jamel spoke about gangs and guns, but mocking a dead teen sparked Internet outrage, including among his 4,500 Twitter followers.
But of late there have been so many gang-related processions, some 100 a year, that the residents have become fearful somebody will be struck by a car or hit by a stray bullet. Those who once bowed their heads are now raising their voices to demand greater oversight and a new cemetery entrance to facilitate a more orderly arrival. Walsh and fellow resident Tony Bansley organized a peaceful protest by more than 200 on a recent Saturday.
Richway vs 54 Asian Brims
There's something really sick happening in East Brickton and it's hard to unsee. It's often a difficult, nearly impossible, task to put context or assign motives to stories about murder, but a disturbing trend East Brickton is making that easy.
These rivalries have sparked beefs that turned deadly, most notable, in the 1990's - East Coast vs. West Coast - which resulted in the murders of arguably the two best in the industry, Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. These vloggers, and social media posts from Jamel Kingston and Jaylen Zhang, concede that this beef went from bad to deadly with the May 2031 shooting of 19-year-old Marquel Kasaab on East Brickton's Upper Westside after 3 man stormed his home there and shot him over a failed robbery that Kasaab attempted. Kasaab, was Jbeezy's close friend. Kasaab was implicated in that robbery where the two conspired to rob someone who was reportedly selling marijuana, according to a June 2031 article in East Brickton Times-Union. Shots were fired into the street of Broadway after Richway members ambushed the street, pressing on citizens, even beating on an innocent Asian kid which later led to a shooting that left 3 members of the 54 Asian Brims injured. JBeezy was the target in a retaliatory shooting for the shooting in July 2031 when he and three other teens went to Broadway in attempt to shoot at the 54 Asian Brims. The bloodshed continued when 54 Asian Brims responded with another mass shooting, injuring 4 people in total. Only 3 days before the shooting, Jamel Kingston was involved in almost 4 shootings on Broadway which led to multiple people getting injured. Jaylen Zhang, Glenn Huang and Jamel Kingston later agreed to a cease fire to keep Richway off of their backs to fight off people who attempted to push them out of Broadway.
